Top ideas and concepts to be further developed together with ŠKODA China
Beijing, 3 April 2019 – ŠKODA China announced on March 31 the winners of its first-ever Clever Mobility Hackathon event in China, held in Beijing with Innoway, a global innovation platform based in China. The two-day event drew 88 participants to compete in different categories of future mobility services.
“We are very excited to organize the first mobility services hackathon here in China. It provides an exceptional platform for both ŠKODA and these bright young talents to develop concepts and solutions for future-oriented mobility services,” said Dr. Ralf Hanschen, President of ŠKODA China. “As part of our Strategy 2025, ŠKODA has made digitization and digital mobility services the cornerstones of its future development. With the hackathon competition, we are launching our digital business and next-generation mobility services into China. Our goal is to develop innovative mobility solutions for customers in China as well as in international markets.”
Innovation and creativity are key drivers for the new economy, including new mobility solutions. ŠKODA’s partner Innoway works to meet this critical need by providing expertise and networks in China’s startup environment, support for the ideation phase and strengthening innovation competence. Located in the heart of Beijing’s “Silicon Valley”, Zhongguancun, and adjacent to some of the nation’s most prestigious universities, Innoway is an ideal platform partner for ŠKODA to advance its strategic goals. ŠKODA and Innoway’s partnership first began in 2018, when ŠKODA participated in the Zhongguancun Innovation & Entrepreneurship Festival.
ŠKODA launched the biggest transformation in its history with Strategy 2025 - a comprehensive transition from being a traditional car manufacturer to a 'Simply Clever Company for the best mobility solutions‘. Over five years, ŠKODA will be investing around two billion euros in alternative drive technologies and new mobility services.
ŠKODA took a major step toward strengthening its innovative power and digital development expertise by establishing a new innovation center – ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab – in Prague, where creative teams are exploring and developing new business models at its innovative idea workshop. Last year, ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab Israel was launched in the IT hotspot of Tel Aviv, to facilitate direct access to innovative projects, high-tech start-ups and IT talent.
As the biggest market for ŠKODA, China is the key driver for new trends in terms of mobility, innovation and connectivity. To push digitalization forward, ŠKODA will soon set up a third innovation hub in China. This new innovation center will cooperate closely with both joint venture partner SAIC ŠKODA, the ŠKODA DigiLabs in Prague and Israel, and other Volkswagen Group innovation entities in China. It will also cooperate with prospective local startups and creative talents to develop new digital and mobility solutions. Additional information on the new ŠKODA innovation hub in China will be announced at the Shanghai Auto Show.
About the ŠKODA Clever Mobility Hackathon
At this first ŠKODA China hackathon, participants were placed in teams of 5 and given a task from a diverse range of areas, such as mobility solutions for patients, self-driving travelling, value-added services for vehicle customers, and other clever mobility solutions for a better life. The teams, whose members included entrepreneurs, university students, programmers, UX designers, and mobility experts, had 48 hours to come up with innovative ideas, supported by different mentors.
A panel of experts from ŠKODA and Innoway judged submissions and determined the winning team. ŠKODA is now exploring opportunities to work with outstanding teams to develop the innovative ideas into real business, as well as recruit young entrepreneurs and talents to join the ŠKODA family. During the “Talent Ride Pitch” selected candidates got the opportunity to introduce themselves to the ŠKODA team on a short city ride in a ŠKODA KAROQ.
